What is a meme?
In the context of the internet, a meme (pronounced “meem”) is a picture, short video or post that gets circulated on social media. Essentially it’s a form of media that can be taken in very quickly by the viewer, as opposed to reading a newspaper column, or watching a documentary. They are used for all sorts of purposes, like comedy, news, and furthering opinions and political agendas. On the whole, this ability to transmit ideas instantaneously across the world is a great form of freedom of speech, but every liberty has pluses and minuses. One of the minuses is that false or misleading information can get spread. Thankfully, with the freedom to post memes comes the freedom to fact check them, and set the record straight!
